Biography of the artist
GANDOLFO was born near Paris in France in 1947.
As a young man, he traveled a lot and spent a year in Tahiti.
A self-taught man and a seasoned individualist, he says this about himself:
One goes to the University one can afford. Some people have their own
University…
At my own School of Fine Arts, I learned how to sculpt when I was about 9,
by carving tomahawks and jet planes out of wood off-cuts with a penknife.
Such childlike games taught me the love and understanding of hidden shapes.
Essentially present, they lay concealed but have a form of material existence, not unlike the clouds that stage for us an infinity of silhouettes. Since then I have never ceased…
A tightrope walker, I work balanced between the Figurative and the Abstract.
Were it not for a nostalgia for technical performance the Figurative would not have much significance for me now.
Prone to various excesses, the Abstract often shifts towards provocation as its only means of expression.
I prefer an approach where themes and subjects, which give the merest hints, are not so obtrusive that they rob the visitor of this or her creativity.
