"Cantefable“ is a term from the Middle Ages for a story which is partly spoken and partly sung or accompanied by music. The programs offered by Nancy Thym and Tilo Viehrig are a blend of stories and music which transport the listener to magical times and places. Their repertoire ranges from medieval romances to traditional stories from Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany and includes programs for children as well as adults.
Nancy Thym has recognized internationally for her programs which combine storytelling, harp music and songs. In her native California she studied theater, dance and anthropology and later folklore and ethnomusicology. She has lived in Germany for over 20 years and where she transforms her extensive research on the history of the harp into programs which are both entertaining and educational – storytelling combined with songs and harp music, ballad programs on specific themes or living history programs in which she portrays harpists of the past.
Tilo Viehrig is a builder and restorer of historical musical instruments and plays various historical bowed instruments as well as organetto. The medieval fiddle, rebec and harp played in Cantefable’s performances are from his workshop. His fiddle and rebec playing harmonizes beautifully with Nancy Thym’s voice.
Together the two of them are working on a project to renovate a Gothic House built in 1493 near Naumburg in former East Germany, which will be transformed into a Center for Early Music.
